Dinosaurs, Science Rooms, and a Hangry Toddler: Our Trip to Fernbank Science Cent

This week, I took Wren on a little adventure to the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta. It was our first visit, and I can already tell it won’t be our last, despite a few lessons learned along the way.

Right now, we’re deep in the dinosaur phase (you know the one “RAWR” all day long, stomping through the living room like a T-Rex), so I had a feeling he’d be into the exhibits. And he was. The life-size dino models had him wide-eyed, and he ran from display to display like it was his own personal Jurassic Park.

He also really loved the science rooms filled with hands-on manipulatives. Watching him explore the puzzles, gears, and levers was the kind of moment that makes these little day trips worth every bit of effort.

The cost? My ticket was $29.07 with taxes, and Wren got in for free. Not bad for a full morning of learning and play.

That said, I definitely learned a few things for next time. I wish I’d packed a lunch. Their café isn’t bad, but if you’ve ever tried to get a tired, picky toddler to sit still and eat something new in a public space… well, you know. He wasn’t having it. Snacks only go so far when you’re two and very opinionated.

We also skipped the trails, which I regret. I think he would’ve enjoyed the nature walk, but by the time we were done exploring inside, he was cranky, tired, and clearly not in the mood for more walking. Next time, we’ll plan that part for earlier in the visit—or save it for a cooler, less overstimulated day.

Overall, it was a fun, budget-friendly outing. If you’re in Atlanta with a dino-loving kiddo, Fernbank is worth the stop. Just maybe bring some familiar snacks, and don’t count on them having the energy for everything in one go.
