Disney World Christmas Trip 2024: Expectations vs. Reality

After an exciting build-up to our Disney World Christmas trip, we’re back home and ready to share how the experience compared to what we originally planned. Spoiler alert: There were some surprises—both magical and challenging—but overall, it was a trip filled with memories we’ll cherish.
December 22: Arrival and Disney Springs
What We Expected:
- A smooth check-in at Caribbean Beach Resort (CBR) and an easy transition to Disney Springs for dinner and Christmas festivities.
What Happened:
- We arrived at CBR around 4:30 PM and were assigned a room in Barbados on the second floor. To our surprise, CBR does not have elevators! Thankfully, our sturdy stroller made navigating the stairs manageable.
- Disney Springs was much busier than we anticipated. It was packed with people, and the diversity of languages and cultures was remarkable. While we loved the lively atmosphere, we realized it could feel overwhelming for visitors from rural areas.
- Dinner at Earl of Sandwich was efficient thanks to mobile ordering. The Christmas Roll was enjoyable, especially the bites with cranberry sauce, although the gravy was basic. We skipped the Christmas Tree Stroll Map activity due to the crowds but still enjoyed admiring the festive trees.
Takeaway: Lower expectations for crowds during the holidays and embrace the vibrant, multicultural environment.
December 23: Magic Kingdom Success
What We Expected:
- A busy but productive day with rope-dropping Fantasyland and catching the fireworks after a dinner at Narcoossee’s.
What Happened:
- This turned out to be our most successful day. We hit Dumbo, Tea Cups, and Winnie the Pooh with minimal waits before enjoying Lightning Lane rides for Peter Pan’s Flight and Pirates of the Caribbean. We even caught Mickey’s Christmas Parade while Wren napped.
- Exhaustion set in by mid-afternoon, so we canceled our Haunted Mansion Lightning Lane and returned to the resort for downtime. Playing in the sand and relaxing was a highlight.
- Despite leaving 40 minutes early, we arrived at Narcoossee’s 30 minutes late due to transportation delays. The staff accommodated us, and the experience—from the Surf N Turf to the fireworks visible from our table—was phenomenal.
Takeaway: Always budget extra time for Disney transportation and prioritize rest breaks.
December 24: Hollywood Studios Challenges
What We Expected:
- A fun-filled day of Star Wars and Toy Story attractions, capped off with Fantasmic.
What Happened:
- Larry woke up sick, but we powered through. Slinky Dog Dash was a hit, but Woody’s Lunch Box had an unexpectedly long wait due to technical issues.
- Sci-Fi Dine-In was less successful this time, as Wren was too fidgety to enjoy the experience. However, Oga’s Cantina was a highlight with its immersive atmosphere and accommodating high chairs.
- We ended the day with Fantasmic, which was a stunning finale despite the day’s hiccups.
Takeaway: Illness can throw a wrench in plans, so flexibility and patience are key.
December 25: A Mixed Christmas at Epcot
What We Expected:
- A magical Christmas exploring Epcot’s World Showcase, capped with a delicious dinner at Spice Road Table and fireworks.
What Happened:
- Rope-dropping Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure was seamless thanks to the Skyliner. We also enjoyed Soarin’, Living with the Land, and Figment with reasonable wait times.
- The holiday shows in the World Showcase added a special touch, but dinner at Spice Road Table was a letdown. While the food was delicious, the service was the worst we’ve experienced at Disney, with long waits and inattentive staff.
- With Larry feeling worse, we skipped the fireworks and returned to the resort early.
Takeaway: Even the most highly recommended dining spots can be hit or miss. Always have a backup plan.
December 26: The Ride Home
What We Expected:
- A leisurely morning at Disney Springs before heading home.
What Happened:
- Wren woke up sick, and we decided to cut our losses and drive home. The drive was rough with two sick passengers and a toddler who threw up twice, but we made it home safely and booked a doctor’s appointment for Wren.
Takeaway: Always pack medicine and prepare for the unexpected on travel days.
Overall Reflections
- Magic Kingdom: Our best day by far. Despite the crowds, it felt manageable and magical.
- Crowds: Every park was crowded, but not as overwhelming as spring break. Knowing what to expect made all the difference.
- Dining: Narcoossee’s exceeded expectations, while Spice Road Table disappointed. Dining experiences can vary widely.
- Flexibility: Being able to adjust plans made the trip enjoyable despite illnesses and challenges.
Would we do it again? Absolutely. The Christmas atmosphere, even with its challenges, was magical and worth it. Next time, though, we might prioritize rest and preparation a bit more.
